An ADS can usually go months or even a year after installation without requiring calibration. However, there are many reasons to have your alcohol detection system professionally calibrated at regular intervals, even if you haven’t had any issues with it. Here are a few examples:
- Preventative maintenance – You don’t want issues to start occurring before you bring your car in to have the ADS checked. Prevention is definitely better in this instance. This is especially true during the hot summer months in southern California, when the high temperatures may result in premature failure of the equipment.
- Avoiding false positives – Keeping your ADS calibrated is a must if you want to avoid being stranded without a vehicle for no good reason. A device that has lost its calibration could cause you to be unable to drive, even when you haven’t had anything to drink.
- Avoiding legal troubles – On the other hand, a device that is not properly calibrated might allow you back on the road when your BAC is too high. This could land you in some serious legal trouble since the ADS indicates that this wouldn’t be a first offense. Additionally, you or someone else could be seriously injured or even killed if you are in an accident due to being under the influence of alcohol.
