In the state of California, there are some pretty particular car window tint laws. For example, when it comes to the windshield, you can only tint the very top few inches. There are also restrictions on the side windows for the front of the vehicle.
However, California is far from having the strictest tint laws. Some states don’t allow any car windows to be tinted at all. So some of our customers wonder, “What will happen if I get my windows tinted here and drive through another state?”
We’re car upgrade experts, not lawyers, so be sure to check your facts with state authorities. However, these are some of the things we have learned about car window tinting between the states.
- States don’t micromanage each other’s tinting laws. If you have California plates, a police officer from another state isn’t going to pull you over for your tint. That doesn’t mean you can get away with breaking other traffic laws though.
- If you move to another state, that may be a different story. You may need to remove an aftermarket tint before getting your registration and plates changed over in order to avoid traffic violations. Tint removal isn’t that expensive, but a court fee is, so it is better to be safe.
